The Necessity of Spa Days

Taking Care of Moi

Like a fine wine, I find that I too need a little tender care in a controlled environment to reach my full potential.

So I schedule a spa day.

This is a fairly new phenomenon for me, basically in the last decade. Prior to this time funding was always an issue. Now, however, I rationalize the expense citing that I spend a lot of time tending to others, now it’s time for others to tend to me.

Care and Grooming

This “me” time helps me practice relaxing while having the necessary maintenance performed on my feet. Depending on what the spa offers, I tend to choose a standard pedicure and then peruse the menu to see if there’s anything interesting or unusual that I might like. I never get a manicure since I rarely have nails worth mentioning. Massages are lovely. Leg and foot massages particularly. If I ever met a man who would massage my feet and legs, I’d run off with him, (just kidding, honey).

I don’t mind talking to the esthetician but I’m just as happy closing my eyes and being silent. Yes I know, hard to believe that I can stop talking long enough but it does happen.

Planning is Everything

Spa days must be carefully planned though. You can’t just waltz into a spa and expect the experience to be marvelous. Well, perhaps if you’re exceptionally rich and can just pop into any spa on the Riviera. But here in the real world, planning is necessary.

Where is the spa? If it’s located in a hotel, if it’s a nice one, I might spring for an overnight stay to prolong the relaxation experience. Is there a pool attached? Well then, bathing suit comes along. Is food available? Well now it’s a full day. Show up, swim, lunch, treatments.

Home Spas!??!?

I know I could give myself a pedicure and lie down on the bed and enjoy soft music and scented candles for half an hour but it’s just not the same. I don’t get the same feeling of being away. Thoughts of what still needs to get done and why aren’t I doing them now instead of just lying here because you know they’re still going to be waiting for you when you get up and doesn’t dinner have to be made and the carpet vacuumed and the garden weeded……..?

Schedule Spa time

It was therefore I scheduled a day at the Scandinavae spa, one of the items on my 50 list. Not only was it faaaaar away from home but there was no talking. I was not required to make nice with anyone, just focus on clearing my mind. While there were no pedicures, there was massage and at least 3 pools, sauna and food. It was grand.
