The Lists

So another new year rolls round and there are tons of lists out there.  Some round up the past year by listing the ‘best of’ or people who died.

Others look forward to the new year by listing top ten resolutions, getting fit tips, self improvement ideas, etc.

Time of the Essence

Patience – Virtue or Vice?

could use some patience, yeah
gotta have some patience, yeah
all it takes is patience,
just a little patience
is all you need

Guns and Roses, Patience

Patience has never been my strong suit.

Apparently patience can be learned.  Even though universe constantly puts me in situations that require patience, I’m loathe to learn it.

Or so the saying goes….

My dream house

We Don’t Live Here Anymore

Watch the shadow cross the floor (sun in an empty room)
We don’t live here anymore (sun in an empty room)

Sun in an empty room, The Weakerthans

So our 190 boxes had been moved to the new house and it was time to go back and take one last look at where we used to live.

It had been pouring down rain all day.  As I stepped into my old living room for the last time, the sun came out.  It hit me that this would be the last time I’d see the sun slant across this floor.  We don’t live here anymore. Continue reading

Remembrance Day

Remembering those who Fought

There is a cemetery in Coriano, Italy.  Mostly Canadians are buried there.

The battle of Coriano Ridge was hard won by the Canadians but it proved to be the turning point in the battle for Italy.  As a Canadian, I never have learned about this battle, never even knew this cemetery existed.

It was an Italian I met by chance that insisted that I needed to go and see this cemetery.  “You are Canadian!  You must go!” he insisted. Continue reading

Endless summer

Endless Summer

Our Endless Summer

I call the place I live the damp coast for a reason.  It rains.  A lot.

Winter is wet, Spring is wet.  June is wet.  We like to call it June-uary.

Normally our summers start in July, if we’re lucky.  August can be dodgy; September and October are cool but usually lovely.  I remember one November where it rained for 20 days solid.

But this year the sun started shining in April.  And it hasn’t stopped since.

Something has changed.  This year we are having an endless summer. Continue reading

Forget those

Where are your Friends when the going gets tough?

Where are your friends when ya need ’em?

I get by with a little help from my friends

Ringo Starr

Why is it that when a woman is going through a tough spot, people leave her alone?

Yet, when a man is going through a tough ordeal, people rally round him.  They bring him food, they offer to make him dinner, they clean his house.

The Evidence

I’ve seen this first hand.

When a friend died, people tripped over themselves to help her husband.  I went over and cleaned his filthy house, made food, helped out with the kids.

Yet when a family friend lost her husband, no one went over to clean her house or made her food.  After a couple of weeks, people stopped calling.  Why? Continue reading

Feeling Special

I’ve lost that Special Feeling

I’m special (special)
So special (special)
Gotta have some of your attention
Give it to me.

Special to No one?

It occurred to me the other day that right now, in my life, I have no one who makes me feel special.

Family, husband, junior, friends – no one says to me, “Sharole, you are special.  You have unique talents and gifts and what you do with them is very special.  You should go forth and use them more often.” Continue reading
